Initial enquiry
Our helpline advisors will answer any general questions you may have and provide you with details of all BMI hospitals that offer BMI varicose vein treatment, which procedures they offer and details of the specialists who work there.
Making an appointment
Your helpline advisor will be able to make an appointment for you at your chosen BMI hospital. They will then send you all the details confirming the date and time, together with a map and any other information you need. Your initial consultation with the specialist will be charged at £125, payable directly on presentation of his or her invoice.
Initial consultation
Your consultation with will last about 30 minutes. This is an opportunity to discuss the options available to you as well as the risks and benefits of treatment. As we believe your safety and well-being should always come first, we will not recommend surgery or treatment if it isn't appropriate for you.
Ultrasound mapping
This is a non-invasive procedure that usually takes about 30 minutes and involves scanning your leg to identify the location of the varicose vein. This may be done at the time of your consultation or you may be asked to return to the hospital for an outpatient appointment at a later date that is convenient to you.
The cost of the scan is £250 (for one leg) and this will be charged either immediately after the scan has been completed or by invoice some days later.
Deciding to proceed to treatment
Whichever treatment is being undertaken, once you have decided to proceed you will be provided with a written quote, clearly explaining what is included in the price. For more information on prices for varicose vein treatment, click
here. You will also be given all the information you need about your admission to hospital. And to help you through the process, there will be a team of people available at the hospital to make it as simple as possible for you. Please note, it is advisable to seek the advice of your GP or other independent medical practitioner before proceeding with treatment.
Your treatment
When you come to the hospital, your consultant, together with our team of dedicated nursing staff, will be with you every step of the way to ensure your safety and well-being at all times. They will care for you whilst you are in hospital and will be on hand should you have any questions.
After leaving hospital
You will be given contact information so you can contact the hospital/consultant should you need to. Our experienced nursing team will also be available to you after you leave hospital to provide advice and support.
Follow-up consultation
Your follow up consultation will normally be about three weeks after treatment. At that consultation (the cost of which is included in your package) your consultant will assess your recovery and discuss whether or not, for cosmetic reasons, further minor surgery is required to remove any remaining unsightly lumps.
These lumps occur where, whilst the underlying cause of their formation has been removed, small bulges in the surface veins remain. Such veins are removed either by sclerotherapy, where a chemical is injected to dissolve the remaining vein, or phlebectomy, where a small incision is made to remove the remaining vein.
The amount of lumps to be removed varies widely from patient to patient but additional charges of between £300 and £750 may be incurred.
