David's story
Having undergone several major operations, David Royle was not in a rush to do anything about his varicose veins... until he read a newspaper article that prompted him into action.
David suffered with very pronounced varicose veins for many years. While describing them as looking like ‘a bunch of grapes’ he had been warned by friends that the treatment and recovery was very painful, and was therefore reluctant to have treatment.
At 68 years old, he has already undergone seven major operations on his hips, back and shoulders, and wasn’t keen on returning to an operating theatre!
Although unsightly, his veins weren’t causing him much pain. However, as time went on he was concerned that his condition could worsen by which time he may not be fit to cope with the surgery.
He then read in a newspaper article about laser treatment for varicose veins, and after talking to his GP and researching the topic he came across on the details of a vascular surgeon who sub-specialises in treating varicose veins, Mr Eddie Chaloner.
David attended a consultation with Eddie Chaloner at the BMI Sloane Hospital in Beckenham, Kent. He was advised that the veins on his left leg were suitable for the laser treatment, but the veins on the right leg were quite tortuous so would have to be stripped out during open surgery using general anaesthetic.
David stayed in hospital for just one night and was delighted to discover that his friends’ tales of terrible pain couldn’t have been further from the truth. He felt only minor discomfort, and was even well enough to take his dogs on a two mile walk the day after his surgery. After a week he was able to drive again, and return to work managing a portfolio of rental properties.
